Housing and Energy

......Oil dependent for construction, running costs, heating, lighting including gas and all fossil fuels.....

Our homes are central to our lives – it is our biggest and most important investment.  Money spent now on improving your home will save you money in the long run whilst also helping to prevent climate change.

Click  here for advice on the best ways to retro-fit older buildings in the community with correct insulation, double glazing and draft proofing.

We are campaigning for all new buildings to comply with the BREAM standards and where appropriate lobby to have domestic renewable energy systems become an integral part of all new builds.

Energy Saving Tips

Research local building materials to reduce transportation and raise awareness of sustainable building materials amongst local builders.

Draughtproofing and insulation –  2 easy steps for a big energy saving.  Many houses have the equivalent of a football sized hole in the wall owing to draughts from windows, doors and chimneys.  Ask us about our Grants and Free Insulation - click here

Use energy efficient appliances to help save money and energy.  Go to www.sust-it.net

Do not leave household appliances or computers on standby – switch them off.

Install low-energy lightbulbs and turn off all lights when not in use.

Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need and keep any spare hot water in a thermos flask for future use.

Whether it is double glazing or combined heat & power, there are many things you can do to make your home more durable and energy efficient.

Consider a post-peak oil housing plan.  Take account of electricity, heating, size, water, location and durability.

Buy local or second-hand furniture - less energy needed and minimises waste.

Take a course in DIY - it’ll make you useful in the home and in the community.

Club together with friends and neighbours to 'bulk-buy' goods you all use - saves on oil for transportation.

Transition Town Rhayader & District's Energy Plans

We have already identified six possible sites which could supply a huge amount of hydro energy to the grid and give Rhayader and district a regular income to develop additional local low carbon schemes.

Plans are also underway to equip a community-use building with a range of sustainable energy systems to both benefit the local community and promote commitment to sustainable living.

We already have a scheme to provide home energy surveys which give you advice on how to be more efficient and calculate your household’s C02 emmisions.  Free or grant-aided insulation is also available via our scheme.  To find out how to apply for these grants click here
